Santorini‘s food culture is based on recipes that have been passed down through generations.

The food culture of the island and its local food are distinguished by dishes that feature ingredients absolutely associated with the Mediterranean diet. The agricultural output of the island, benefiting from the volcanic soil, presents exceptional culinary delicacies that cater to even the most discerning tastes.

I have been visiting the island over 20 years, making at least 2-3 visits each year. Below, I will provide you with the top 5 restaurants and tavernas on the island.

My preferences are solely based on food. Random selection:

  1. Good Heart Akrotiri Restaurant epitomizes the essence of homemade Greek flavors, using organic ingredients sourced from their own farm. Specializing in authentic Greek cuisine, their meat platters are crafted with care by Anna, the restaurant’s Chef, following traditional and cherished recipes.

  2. Glaros Tavern is a family-operated traditional eatery specializing in seafood dishes, conveniently located near Red Beach and historical ruins. The establishment prides itself on serving fresh vegetables sourced from the owner’s garden, as well as locally sourced meats and seafood. Should you opt for fresh fish, do not hesitate to inquire about the day’s catch to enjoy the freshest selection available, possibly caught by the owner personally.

  3. Esperisma Bar Restaurant is a highly recommended establishment for those looking to enjoy a splendid dining experience while witnessing the breathtaking Caldera-Sunset with their partner. Esperisma was a Nominee in 2024 World Luxury Restaurant Awards. It boasts a meticulously curated menu, designed to cater and satisfy any palate and ready to offer their guests an unforgettable gastronomic experience.

  4. Trafos Restaurant represents a recent addition to Santorini, offering an opportunity for diners to explore the diverse flavors of Mediterranean cuisine. This establishment prides itself on being a meticulously organized dining venue that specializes in Mediterranean culinary techniques, utilizing locally sourced ingredients exclusively. The menu serves as a tribute to the rich culinary traditions of the region, presenting a delightful array of fresh seafood, locally grown vegetables, and fragrant herbs that are sure to captivate your palate from the very first taste.

  5. Trinacria Restaurant is the restaurant that impressed me more, although it is not based on the Greek cuisine. I had to come back three times to confirm that I was not wrong! True Sicilian tastes, delicious pasta dishes, and authentic pizza baked in a wood-fired oven as only the Italians know how to make. In fact, it is the best pizza I have ever had!
