Delos, a tiny island, is just a 30 to 40-minute boat ride away from Mykonos. Renowned for its historical significance, Delos has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Abandoned since the 6th century AD, it remains uninhabited and is preserved solely as an archaeological landmark. The island is famed as the mythical birthplace of the Olympian deities Apollo and Artemis.

Delos Island offers a convenient half-day excursion to explore one of the Aegean Sea’s most significant archaeological treasures.

The lion statues are the standout features of the archaeological site. Initially, there were between nine to twelve lion statues, donated by the citizens of Naxos in the 7th century BC to safeguard the harbor. Nearly all the statues on Delos are replicas. The five authentic lions have been placed in the museum to preserve and protect them from the elements.

Tip: There is nowhere to stay or eat in Delos, so bring snacks and water with you. There’s very little shade so don’t forget your hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
