If you’re planning a trip to Crete and love outdoor activities, don’t hesitate to indulge.
Samaria Gorge is located inside the Samaria National Park. The Gorge is an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, situated in the White Mountains of Crete.
The name derives from an ancient village once situated there, deserted in 1962 when the territory was designated a National Park, mainly to serve as a sanctuary for the endangered Capra Aegagrus Cretica, also referred to as Kri Kri.
The hike begins at Xyloskalo at an altitude of 1250m, and ends at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli.
The most famous part of the hike is the section known as the “Gates” or “Irongates”, where the two sides of the gorge are 4m apart with a height of 500m.
