The Samaria Gorge is renowned as one of the most popular hiking destinations in Greece. If you are planning a visit Crete this year and have an interest in outdoor pursuits, embarking on this hike is highly recommended.

Situated within the boundaries of the Samaria National Park in the Prefecture of Chania, this gorge is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve nestled in the White Mountains of Crete.

It derives its name from an ancient village that once stood within its confines. It was abandoned in 1962 upon the establishment of the National Park, primarily to provide a sanctuary for the endangered Capra Aegagrus Cretica, commonly known as Kri Kri.

The starting point for this trek is Xyloskalo, situated at an elevation of 1250m, culminating at the picturesque coastal village of Agia Roumeli. A highlight along the route is the segment referred to as “Gates” or “Irongates,” where the two sides of the gorge are separated by a mere 4m with a sheer drop of 500m.
