Panagia (Virgin Mary) Paraportiani Church: The Lady of the South Gate.

Panagia paraportiani literally means Virgin Mary (Panagia) of South Gate (Paraportiani), as its entrance was found in the side gate of the entrance to the Kastro area, and it is probably the most photographed church on the island of Mykonos.

Classified as a national monument, it is the perfect example of Cycladic architecture. The church dates back to the middle of the 15th century A.D., and it is the central feature of the “Kastro,” or castle area, the oldest section of the town.

This impressive, whitewashed church actually consists of five separate churches, which are joined.

The four churches, dedicated to Saint Eustathios, Saint Anastasia, Saint Sozon, and Saints Anargyroi, are situated at ground level. These churches form the foundation for a fifth church that has been constructed above them.

Although the church is closed, it remains a vital part of Greek cultural heritage and is an incredible site that should not be missed.
