The National Marine Park of Zakynthos is home to the loggerhead turtles, one of the most endangered Species of Europe.
Founded in 1999 and located in Laganas Bay, the park is part of the Natura 2000 ecological network. Visitors may be lucky enough to encounter the Caretta caretta sea turtle, the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), the Posidonia seagrass, and various bird species such as Falco eleonorae and Calonectris diomedea.
Marathonisi Island is the only island within the Marine Park accessible to the public. Located a few miles from the coast, it can be reached via one of the many excursions departing from Laganas, Agios Sostis, and Keri. Marathonisi is also known as Turtle Island due to its turtle-like shape.
