Milos island is proud of its fascinating history. The famous statue of Venus de Milo was discovered here in 1820. Most exhibits in the Cycladic wing of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens are findings from Milos Island.

The ancient statue of Venus de Milo is a real Greek masterpiece created during the Hellenistic period. The exact period of its creation is uncertain but perhaps between 150-110 BC.

The statue represents Aphrodite, who was the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

The statue was unearthed on the island of Milos in 1820 by a local named Georgios Kentrotas, who was unaware of its significance and kept it on his property. It caught the attention of a French sailor, Jules Dumont D’Urville, who recognized its value and arranged its purchase through the French Ambassador.

Venus de Milo, also often called also called “Aphrodite of Melos’, is used as the symbol of Milos. The original sculpture is exhibited at the Louvre Museum.
