Mesologgi – The Tales of Heroes & Revolutionaries
Mesologgi or Mesolongi is far from any other cosmopolitan city. Located in western Greece in the Gulf of Patra city, it is the capital of Aetolia-Acarnania region. It is a sacred city, home to many revolutionary heroes and rich in history, owing to its significant role in the Greek Revolution of 1821. It stands as a national emblem of dignity, sacrifice, and freedom.
Messolongi was the scene of one of the most dramatic and poignant episodes of the Greek War of Independence, known as the Exodus of Messolongi, following a mass breakout on the night of April 10, 1826, the event had tragic repercussions for a large portion of the population.
Indeed, the city’s enchantment largely stems from the Klisovas lagoon biotope, which comprises a system of six distinct lagoons. It is designated as an Environmental Park and is safeguarded under the Ramsar Treaty.
An ideal small paradise for birdwatchers and eco-nature enthusiasts, there are activities available to enhance your understanding of the local environment.
