Marathon Island – The Turtle Island

Marathon Island or Marathonisi, as the Greeks call it, is a tiny island also known as the Turtle Island because it has been a place of reproduction for the loggerhead sea turtles.

The island has the shape of a turtle, belongs to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and it’s included in the Natura 2000 protection program.

There are daily boats that can take you to Marathonisi from Laganas bay or from Keri beach. If possible, rent a boat on your own and venture away from the crowds. Take the opportunity to stay there as long as you wish without the strict schedules of the daily boats.

With dreamy clear blue waters, and fine golden sand, Marathonisi is definitely an oasis and a tiny paradise that can make you feel, like you are somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

The impressive caves are among the things worth seeing on the island.

Advice: Bring your own food and water if you are going to rent a boat on your own. This experience may require a bit more effort and money but the scenery away from the crowds will reward you.
