Nafplio – Greece’s Most Romantic City

Nafplio was the first capital of Greece after the liberation from the Turks in 1830.

Incredibly picturesque, it is considered the most romantic city in Greece.

Charming alleys to stroll through, Venetian castles with stunning views, delicious food, beautiful coastlines—whether sandy or pebbled, busy or remote—you can find everything you may need in Nafplio.

This city is unquestionably worth visiting for at least 2–3 days. However, many travellers make Nafplio their base (and it is the perfect base in my opinion) to visit surrounding cities and sites.

Don’t miss climbing the Palamidi Fortress, which still stands tall today and proves the rich history of the city.

Perched on a hill overlooking Nafplio, Palamidi Fortress is an impressive Venetian stronghold that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the town.

Take a boat trip to Bourtzi, the small islet of Agioi Theodoroi.

Bourtzi is perhaps the trademark of Nafplio. You can find it in every postcard, photo, or article mentioning the city!

Bourtzi is another small fortress, built to ward off pirates.

Nafplio is one of the most romantic getaway destinations for Athenians, with tons of things to do and see.
