On my trips, I am compelled to explore the history of local traditional foods and I can’t resist tasting them!

I know that Lefkada is most popular for its beaches, but it also holds a unique ability of luring the travelers in, with its traditions, its authentic character, as well as its cuisine.

The island’s local cuisine has been influenced primarily by the mainland of Roumeli and subsequently by the Venetians, owing to their conquest.

Fish is undoubtedly the island’s staple product. One must sample the Savoro fish, prepared with garlic, onions, and rosemary. The renowned lentils cultivated on the Englouvi village plateau are offered in traditional taverns, seasoned simply with garlic, olive oil, and oregano.

Mantolato or Madolato is a traditional pastry made from almonds or nuts, honey and egg white meringue.

Lefkada boasts its unique pie as well, known as Ladopita or Oilpie. This olive oil-based delicacy is traditionally prepared by grandmothers in villages, crafted in large quantities, and then distributed as gifts to family and friends.

Among the must try foods are the spicy sausages or Salamies usually combined as a meze with Ouzo, wine or tsipouro.
