Exploring the history of local traditional foods during your travels sounds like a delightful adventure! Corfu, indeed, is renowned for its stunning architecture and beautiful beaches, but its rich culinary traditions are equally captivating. The island’s cuisine is a unique blend of Greek, Venetian, French, and British influences, offering a variety of flavors and dishes that reflect its diverse history. The Venetian influence on the island’s local cuisine is particularly notable due to the period of Venetian rule.
From the Venetian-inspired “Pastitsada” to the local specialty “Sofrito,” Corfu’s food scene is a treasure trove for any food lover. The island’s fertile land also contributes to its distinctive cuisine, with ingredients like the locally cultivated kumquat. Enjoy your culinary explorations in Corfu!
Corfu offers a delightful array of traditional dishes that highlight the island’s rich culinary heritage. Fish of course is the main product of the island.
Here are some must-try foods:
Sofrito: Veal cooked with garlic, wine sauce, and white pepper.
Pastitsada: Veal or chicken cooked with cinnamon, wine, fresh tomatoes, and various spices, typically served in traditional tavernas.
Bourdetto: A spicy fish dish made with different types of fish, commonly scorpion fish.
Bianco: A traditional fish dish cooked with fatty fish for a creamy texture.
Tsigarelli: A spicy dish made with seasonal wild greens, onion, garlic, and fresh tomatoes, often served as a side dish or meze with ouzo. This is my favourite and if spicy is your thing you should definitely try it.
Gialetia: Corn-based pancakes made with corn flour, vanilla, raisins, and orange juice, fried and served with honey or sugar and cinnamon.
Nouboulo: Corfu’s version of prosciutto, traditionally smoked and often enjoyed as a meze with ouzo, wine, or tsipouro. A must try!
Kumquat: Found in every corner of the island and available in various forms, such as liqueur, jams, spoon sweets, and even perfume.
These dishes offer a taste of Corfu’s unique flavors and culinary traditions. Enjoy exploring them!
