The Holy Monastery of Virgin Faneromeni, also known as the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary Revealed, stands just 3 km from the main town of Lefkada, perched on a hill with a breathtaking view of Agios Ioannis beach.

Regarded as one of the most important historical and religious sites on the island, the Monastery serves as the island’s guardian and symbolizes its longstanding religious traditions since the medieval era. Originally constructed in 1634, it underwent renovations in the 18th century. Unfortunately, it was later destroyed by fire but was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century and has been preserved in that state to the present day.

A notable feature for visitors is the icon of the Virgin Mary, crafted by a Monk from Mount Athos in 1887.

The monastery complex also hosts a new Ecclesiastical Museum, which showcases a rich collection of icons, books, vestments, and artworks that reflect the island’s ecclesiastical heritage.
