Drakolimni or “Dragons Lake”.
Official name: Stefaniada Lake
Caution: This one is strictly for experienced hikers and it is not recommended for beginners!
Drakolimni, also known as Dragon’s Lake, is cradled amidst the peaks of the Epirus mountains..
Specifically, it is located on Mount Tymfi, at an altitude of approximately 2,050 meters, and is named after a rare species of small alpine newts.
This route is arguably the most renowned for hiking and climbing in the region, with a strong recommendation for visits between May and October, as the area is heavily snow-covered during the remaining months.
A hike spanning approximately 8 kilometers, featuring an elevation gain of over 1000 meters, typically requires around 10 hours for a round trip and presents a high level of difficulty.
After all your efforts, the scenery unfolds so breathtakingly beautiful that it seems almost beyond belief.
The ascent is dotted with numerous springs and spots where you can marvel at the magnificent view. Midway, there’s a shelter where you can pause to rest or even spend the night. The memories captured from your journey will more than make up for any fatigue and trouble experienced along the way.
