Corfu boasts a rich history that stretches back approximately 3,000 years. The island has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Era, making it one of Greece’s most historically significant locations.

Known as Kerkyra in Greek, its historical narrative dates back to the 8th century BC when it was colonized by the Corinthians. They referred to the island as Korkyra, naming it after the daughter of the river god Asopus.

According to legend, Kerkyra was a nymph born from the Asopus River. Poseidon, the god of the sea, fell in love with her and brought her to the island, which was then named in her honor. Over time, the name Korkyra evolved into Kerkyra in the Doric dialect, preserving its mythical origins.
