The history of Chania began during the Neolithic period, when the first inhabitants built a settlement on the hill of Kastelli, above today’s Venetian harbor. The hill was chosen not for its wonderful view, but for its defensive properties.

Chania is built on the site of ancient Kydonia, a city that according to legend and Cretan Mythology takes its name from its founder, Kydonas.

Excavations carried out in Chania’s Old Town, have revealed it to be one of the cities of Minoan Crete. Following the collapse of the Minoan civilization, it grew into a politically powerful city-state and remained so, through the Classical Greek period.

Chania Old Town is a must-visit destination if you are spending any time on the island of Crete. A walk along the narrow pedestrian-only streets, show a unique blending of historical buildings with traditional and modern architecture. The influence of the numerous invaders though the centuries, such as the Venetians and Ottomans can clearly be seen throughout the town.
