About Crete

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, boasts stunning beaches, wild natural beauty, and a rich cultural heritage spanning thousands of years.

Situated about 160 kilometers (99 miles) south of the Greek mainland and approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Anatolia, Crete covers an area of 8,450 square kilometers (3,260 square miles).

Its coastline stretches for 1,046 kilometers (650 miles), bounding the southern edge of the Aegean Sea. To the north lies the Sea of Crete (or North Cretan Sea), while the Libyan Sea (or South Cretan Sea) lies to the south.

Crete’s diverse landscape, from rugged mountains to fertile plains, has shaped its history, culture, and vibrant way of life.
