Acheron River – The gate to the underworld.
The Acheron River is situated in the Epirus region, merely 46km from the city of Preveza and a short 25km distance from Parga. It derives its name from the deity Acheron, who, in Greek mythology, is recognized as the guardian of the underworld’s river. Legend has it that the souls of the deceased were ferried across the Acheron River to Hades, the god of the underworld. Additionally, the goddess Thetis is said to have immersed her son Achilles in these waters, grasping him by the heel, thus bestowing upon him immortality.
The river is considered a masterpiece of nature with a breathtaking gorge scenery, bright blue clear waters and beautiful surroundings, with rich vegetation.
Although the water is freezing cold even in the summer, it is also refreshing. It’s easy to walk along the gorge and find deep spots to swim in.
It is still one of the least known places in Epirus, thus it retains its unspoiled natural beauty and secret energy.
There is an abundance of activities available, including rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and fishing. Above all, you can relish the stunning natural scenery and discover it by participating in organized trekking.
Near the river stands the watermill of Souli, a picturesque site well worth exploring.
