Deciding where to stay on Lefkada can be simplified by asking yourself three key questions:
– Do you have the ability or willingness to rent a car?
– Is your visit planned for the high season or the low season?
– Are you adhering to a budget?
Let’s examine each question in detail.
If you’re not planning to rent a car, it’s advisable to rent an apartment in a central location with convenient bus links. Nydri village and Lefkada city are the top recommendations for this purpose.
Both villages are ideal if you are into nightlife and want to party, but not so much if you are planning to relax on your holidays. Keep in mind that if you rent a car or a scooter, you have the freedom to book anywhere you want on the island (meaning that you may be able to save money by booking a nice apartment in a less known village) and explore the island at your own pace.
The high season is always more expensive and crowded than the low season, and even more so than the off-season. I always prefer to travel in the off-season to avoid the crowds, but that’s just me. The second question relates to the first because if renting a car is not an option, navigating the bus system to book a hotel outside the main villages can become cumbersome.
To avoid overcrowded tourist spots, consider booking accommodations outside of Nydri or Lefkada.
For our last question, if you are on a budget, consider booking cheap accommodation in a small village; with the savings, you could rent a scooter or a car.
Some popular spots to visit:
– Nydri village and Lefkada city are similar and recommended for those seeking livelier holidays with numerous bars, restaurants, and shopping options. Most of the time, renting a car is unnecessary. From Lefkada City’s main bus station, you can board a bus and travel to the island’s most popular tourist destinations, such as Nidri, Vassiliki, and Agios Nikitas, following the basic route.
– For a tranquil holiday, consider Nikiana if you delight in reading a book far from bustling tourist spots. This charming and serene fishing village is an ideal family-friendly destination, offering an escape from the crowds, complete with an array of tavernas and shops.
– Syvota is a picturesque village with charming alleys to stroll through, an attractive bay, and vibrant evenings.
– Vasiliki is the perfect relaxation resort with an amazing bay for beach lovers. There are plenty of activities to engage into and it’s ideal for water sports enthusiasts. The harbor is lined with bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, making the nights lively.
– Mikros Gialos is my tiny hidden gem away from the crowds, featuring a perfect blue flag beach. Here, you can also find water sports activities. It’s the ideal resort village if you are traveling with family, offering a variety of restaurants and shops.
– Agios Nikitas combines a fine beach with a mix of sand and pebbles. In the charming port, you’ll find a lively atmosphere with bars and seafood taverns to enjoy a meal with a view. The benefit of staying in Agios Nikitas is its proximity to the vibrant nightlife of Lefkada, allowing for an easy transition from tranquil cocktail evenings to energetic party nights within a 15-20 minute drive.
If you are on a tight budget, Vassiliki, Mikros Gialos, and Nikiana villages will provide you with more affordable accommodation options.
